Pamela Colman Smith RWS Tarot Cards Deck
By Arthur Edward Waite
A great scholar on divining, Arthur Edward Waite was unsatisfied with both the traditional tarot as well as the Egyptian version used by the Golden Dawn.
He therefore decided to create a new deck based on his own personal esoteric studies.
He entrusted the graphics to a young American Artist recently affiliated with the order, Pamela Colman Smith. He was sure that she would be able to produce an artistically pleasing deck and even more important, a deck with a symbolic weight that would make it one of the greatest esoteric creations.
In 1909 the Artist, Pamela Colman Smith, under the direction of Arthur Edward Waite, created an innovative deck of 78 Tarot cards.
Thanks to the descriptive scenes that illustrate each of the Minor Arcana, the Rider Waite deck distinguished itself from the centuries old tradition of Tarots and became a reference point for every deck published from then on.
